Trip Planning: Israel

This month has been so hectic for me at work. Perhaps that is because I will be on leave for almost a month in a couple of weeks. I have to get things accomplished or at least have things turned over to specific people before my leave starts. I will be taking my family to Israel to visit some relatives and introduce them to my Jewish culture. I have always been proud of my heritage and I wish for my children to have that sense of identity and pride as well. As an introduction to our history and culture, I thought it would be apt to have the family experience one of those Jewish tours. I had my wife and children actively participate in planning our trip so they will be more excited and interested. My children even did some research on historical places in Israel and contributed to the final itinerary.

We're Not Exactly Alike

My sister and I have very different idea of what makes for a nice home. I’m more a laid back person when it comes to decorating. I like things to be simple and have nice, clean lines. I think there is a huge difference between being messy and being dirty. My sister on the other hand thinks that she could never have her house as disorganized as mine is. If there are dirty dishes in the sink or a spot on her tablecloth then she has to clean it up right away. Well, I would much rather spend some quality time with my kids every evening instead of worrying about a few dirty dishes. I really don’t mind if that’s the way she wants to live her life. I just wish that she wouldn’t judge me about a few out of place dishes or a tiny crumb on the kitchen table.

My Daughter's Wedding and My Slide-show

I had been planning my beautiful daughter’s first wedding for almost a year and had spent thousands of dollars already on the planning and food and various other important things. It was all making me very nervous, happy and extremely nostalgic about the days before my daughter even began looking at men. I wanted her to know that me and her mother remember everything and kept all the memories and pictures of her growing up. But we also wanted to make it a very nice presentation in front of the entire wedding. I asked around to figure out the best way to present our slide-show. I eventually got the suggestion to rent out a screen and projector that would allow us to show the slide-show to everyone at once. I quickly searched outdoor movie screens and projector rentals in central Texas, since buying one would have been way too much money. They came and set up everything and it worked perfectly. My daughter loved the slide-show and her day couldn’t have been more perfect.

How to Cook Fish on Your Gas Grill Without Destroying It

Most folks that have been cooking on a weber gas grill for some time now probably know that grilling is most always done with the grill cover open. However, there are a few instances when you are going to want to close the grill cover while cooking. One such occasion is when you are cooking delicate foods such as flounder or tilapia.

When you are grilling with the grill cover open you are using a cooking method known as conductive cooking. When you close the lid of the grill while cooking, you are now using the cooking method known as convective cooking. You are now incorporating the method of cooking used by your oven in the kitchen as opposed to the method used by your gas grill.

Now why use the same method of cooking as does your oven? Why not just use your oven you might ask? Short answer – it’s nicer outside when the weather is warm!

What we are doing by using our propane grill in this fashion is allowing us to introduce moisture into the cooking process. This moisture allows us to successfully cook those delicate foods such as the fish we mentioned above. The process works best if you have a multiple burner gas grill (at least two).

The method works like this. Do not light the burner over which your fish will be placed. Then after lighting the other burner, place a pan of liquid directly on the burner. This liquid can be be wine, chicken broth, shrimp stock., etc – any liquid that will add to the flavor of the fish while imparting moisture into the cooking process.

Now brush the down side of the fish with olive oil and place directly on the grate if cast iron or on a cast iron griddle if your grate is thin wire. You can also use aluminum foil.

Look for pinkish or clear moisture on the top of the fish to determine when to flip. Judge your fish’s doneness the same way you would out of the oven – does your fish flake easily? Or use a thermometer to determine internal safe temperature.

By following these simple tips, you are sure to be enjoying your fish hot off your gas grill this grilling season!

U.K. insurer Legal & General Group PLC raised its full-year dividend by 24% on Thursday. It’s business continued to create more cash on the back of a recovery in sales, release of new life insurance no medical products and an increase in pension schemes. In a statement they have said they are “confident” about their growth prospects. L&G would still generate high volumes of money and would steadily boost the proportion of the that may be paid in dividends, Mr Breedon added, effectively promising that dividends would carry on growing even when cash generation didn’t within the medium term. “Our message is you can have cash generation, you could have sustainable cash generation to pay for dividends, however, you may also have sustainable business growth.” Nevertheless its UK general insurance business incurred a loss of £8 million after December’s snow caused a spike in household claims. Inspite of this Legal and General are going to be “a growing force as the welfare state retreats and consumers turn to high-quality, low risk, savings and investment provision”.

Language Differences Down Under?

Whilst I’ve always know that Americans will never be able to fully master the English language I had always though that Australians had a fairly similar understanding of the language as the English. However I was having a look online for some sunglasses from Australia the other day, in preparation for when I move out there, and came across these Omni Optics sunnies. Admittedly it’s not a huge stretch to figure out that sunnies mean sunglasses. However I think this is one of those things that you wouldn’t be aware of unless you were Australian, which is in direct contrast to the Americans who manage to push their language differences onto everyone else. It would be great if there was some kind of phrase book for English to Australian as I reckon there will be quite a few random words, besides barbie, that us Brits wouldn’t get straight off the bat.

Using an Asphalt Paint and Sealer

If you have blacktop on your driveway or parking area you may not know that it requires maintenance every three or four years. In fact, applying an asphalt paint that is also a sealer can really extend the life of this material. Without a sealer, the petroleum cement will tend to degrade in the sun from the UV rays. As this happens, it loses its ability to keep the aggregate bonded properly and the aggregate begins to come loose. This starts as just a small divot but if left unattended it can easily expand into a pot hole. These are very hard to deal with because even if you patch them with a cold patch material, they will tend to break out again. You are much better off preventing this problem from happening.

When you get ready to apply the sealing paint, you need to be sure that surface is absolutely clean and dry. The best way to prepare it is with a pressure washer and soap. This will get up all the dirt and grime and give a good surface for the asphalt to adhere to.

You want to only do this project in the summer because the heat will help the coating to cure properly and reach its full strength potential.
